50 Ohm Coax Cable

You will find a wide range of 50 ohm RF coaxial cables in this product category. In terms of use, we recommend it for CB, VHF, UHF, WIFI and GSM antennas and equipment as well as other communication devices. When selecting a cable, pay attention to its attenuation. This value determines how much the supplied radio frequency power decreases over a cable length of 100 meters. This is given in dB by the manufacturers and has different values at different frequencies. Read more...

Every 3dB the power is halved, so if we see that a cable has a loss of 9dB at 100Mhz, then at 100W input power at the end of the 100m cable it is approx. 12.5W RF power will be displayed. The basic characteristics of a cable are determined by its material (eg copper or only copper-plated steel) and its bending radius (an important factor during installation!). In each case, we need to buy the right connector for our cable, as their inner core and outer cable diameters vary from model to model.

What should you know about coax cable?

There are two types of coax cables: baseband and broadband. While baseband coaxial cables can be used to transmit digital signals, their broadband counterparts can only transmit analogue signals. Of course, television has also revolutionised the field of cables, as broadband coaxial cables have become indispensable for the transmission of TV signals.

Which cables are used for baseband and broadband signal transmission?

Today, 50 ohm and 75 ohm coaxial cables are the most commonly used. For baseband transmission, the 50 ohm type is more common, while for broadband transmission, the 75 ohm version is used. However, it is important to note that 75 ohm coaxial cables can also be used for baseband transmission.

How is a 50 ohm coax cable constructed?

It requires the following 4 components:

Shielding layer

For everyday use, braided copper shielding is the most common choice. Braiding is an excellent shielding technique for cables because it provides adequate bendability. This means that the shielding is not weakened if, for example, the coax cable is bent at the corner. The quality of the shielding also determines whether the cable will cause any problems for other technical devices.

Insulation

The material used for insulating the coax cable may include:

  • Polytetrafluoroethylene
  • Polypropylene
  • Polyethylene

Semi-gap insulation is also available. In this case, air serves as an effective insulating material at the location of the holes.

Inner vessel

Solid or stranded copper conductors are mainly used as internal conductors. Copper has excellent conductivity. However, if the coaxial cable is subjected to much higher than average mechanical stress, it is advisable to use copper-coated steel as the inner conductor, as steel has even stronger mechanical parameters than copper.

Sheathing

Coax cables are usually sheathed in PVC. PVC is a chemically very resistant and hard plastic, which is used as a sheath for many other electrical cables besides coax. For cables, of course, only soft PVC can be used for the sheathing.

What are its characteristics?

  • Tapping: this value shows exactly how much signal strength is lost through the cable. The attenuation of cables is affected by the material of the central core and the frequency of the signal, as well as the humidity of the air. Ideally, coaxial cables should have no attenuation at all, so that TVs and other devices always get a strong signal quality.
  • Wave impedance: If the impedance deviates from the optimum, the transmission of a TV, for example, may be "ghosted". It is advisable to handle coaxial cables with great care, as a slight break or sudden bending of the cable can significantly reduce the signal strength.
  • Delay: In any network, reducing delay time is always an important factor. The lower the permittivity of the insulating material, the better the delay time. The cable's delay time is determined by the dielectric constant of the insulation.
