6V Lead-Acid Battery
Many of us are familiar with the familiar 12V battery that powers our cars and other vehicles. But far fewer people know that there is a 'little brother' to this battery, which we use to power some recreational vehicles, motorcycles, mobile devices and other applications. But old cars over 30 years old may also need a battery of this capacity to power their 6-volt system. Read more...

How do we charge our 6V batteries?
If you need a 6V battery for your equipment, motorbike or oldtimer, it is best to use a suitable 6V charger. This will ensure that the battery is fully charged without any problems. This happens when the display shows 6V. It's worth knowing that these chargers actually produce around 7V to ensure a full charge of the battery. If you don't have a 6V battery charger at home, but only have a 2V charger handy, for example, and don't want to invest in a bigger one, this is another way to charge a 6V battery.
But it takes a long time for the low voltage charger to charge your 6V battery. What is the difference? Significant! A normal charger will do the job in about 1-2 hours, whereas the version we are talking about will charge the battery in 10-12 hours. That's a big difference, and it shows in the cost. But we should also remember that a 2V charger will never be able to fully charge this type of battery. Usually it will charge enough to start the device, but that's about it. But what if we already have a 12V charger in the household. Now many of us think this is it, this charger will charge a 6V battery twice as fast.
But this can be quite dangerous. As the battery charges, it generates internal heat. At the right charging voltage, the internal heat is never high enough to damage the battery, but when charging at 12V, the internal heat can actually cause the electrolyte inside the battery to boil. It is not out of the question to use a 12V charger until your equipment or motorcycle starts, but never use a 12V charger to fully charge a 6V battery.
How long is the life of a 6V battery?
Battery life depends on the manufacturer, its use and maintenance. In general, this type of battery lasts 3-5 years, but can last up to 7 years. However, in order to enjoy their life as long as possible, there are a few rules to follow. The optimum operating temperature is 25 degrees Celsius.
If you use them at higher temperatures, their lifespan will rapidly decrease. Generally speaking, for every 8 degrees Celsius increase in temperature, the battery life is halved. So, for example, if you regularly use a battery at 33 degrees Celsius, its lifetime will be reduced to 2-3 years. In addition, make sure that the battery charge level never drops below 45 percent, as this will also greatly minimise battery life.
The DND Telecom webshop stocks Enersys brand 6V batteries
Enersys Genesis NP 6V batteries feature heavy-duty, thick lead-calcium grids for reliable performance. The high energy density design, factory-sealed housing and leak-proof construction ensure that these rechargeable, sealed lead acid batteries are extremely reliable and virtually maintenance-free. The Genesis NP 6V battery design incorporates a pressure relief valve to release pressure build-up in the battery housing.
This vent is completely self-closing, ensuring the highest possible internal recombination rate is achieved in each battery. Genesis NP batteries are designed to operate for 3-5 years in standby applications. They can operate over a wide temperature range and recover after repeated deep discharges.
In addition, the DND Telecom web store also offers 6V batteries from Emos and FIAMM brands
FIAMM FG 6V sealed lead acid batteries are designed to meet medium to long discharge rates with a design life of 5 years. FIAMM 6V FG series batteries are available in capacities from 1.2 to 12Ah. Connection is easy on smaller models thanks to lightweight terminals that can be quickly connected. These products are designed to provide a wide range of solutions for all applications and offer unsurpassed proven reliability, meeting the highest recognised international standards.
FiAMM's SSLA batteries use VRLA technology, which operates at 99% internal recombination efficiency. They have a non-spillable and maintenance-free design, eliminating the need for electrolyte refills during their lifetime. The SSLA series are non-hazardous for air/sea/rail/road transport and are 100% recyclable. SSLA's self-discharge rate is less than 2% per month, guaranteeing a long shelf life.
