There are, however, big differences in the way they work, especially in terms of energy consumption. We therefore need to think carefully about which type of cooler to buy.

Which cooler to choose for yourself?

There are free-standing, built-in, drawer or space-saving openable boxes. A big advantage of the free-standing version is that you can place it anywhere. The absorption cooler is perhaps the most suitable model for this purpose, as it guarantees silent operation. In the case of built-in, top-mounted and drawer fridges, there is a choice between compressor and absorption versions.

These appliances are space-saving and compact in design. The only question is whether you want to buy the unit for home or mobile use. This will largely determine which one you choose.

How does an absorption cooler work?

Both absorption and compressor coolers work on the principle that evaporation removes heat. The principle of operation is not very different, the main difference being the refrigerant.

In this case, the heating cartridge heats up the concentrated ammonia solution it contains, which then passes on as vapour. The pressurised ammonia gas then becomes a liquid in the condenser, which evaporates by the addition of hydrogen, removing heat from the refrigerator.

The ammonia gas is then converted into a solution, which flows back into the heating unit and everything starts from the beginning. It's worth noting that this type of chiller was widely used in the early 20th century, but then came the compressor versions, which used much less energy.

Nowadays, these types of coolers are used more in specialised areas, such as on the road, where they may be able to be operated by other means than mains power.

How long will the gas cylinder last if the absorption cooler is gas-powered?

To make sure you have enough gas cylinders to take with you on a trip or journey, you need to know how much your absorption cooler consumes. The average daily consumption of a 110 litre absorption fridge is 250 grams of gas. So, if you go on holiday for a week, you will use roughly 3 kilograms of LPG to run your fridge.

Why choose an absorption fridge?

One of the great advantages of this type of cooler is that it is completely silent, so you can even place it near your sleeping area without disturbing your sleep or relaxation. This is a big advantage not only in the camper or truck, but also in smaller homes where the kitchen and bedroom are in the same room.

Another great advantage of absorption coolers is that they can be operated not only from 230 V, but also from LPG or batteries. But there are also models that can be powered by solar panels. If you're looking for such a cooler, look for the AES mark on the cooler's label.

Well, if you choose an absorption chiller, you don't have to think about how you're going to be able to run it, it gives you maximum independence. Another great advantage of absorption coolers is that they are extremely reliable, in their case they do not require maintenance, or if they do, it is minimal.

What are the disadvantages of using absorption coolers?

These types of coolers have a number of advantages. But there are also disadvantages to using absorption coolers, namely that they use more energy than the compressor versions.

But it should also be mentioned that if you are travelling to a region or country with your caravan or truck where the air temperature is consistently above +32 degrees Celsius, for example in deserts, there is limited use of this type of cooler.

It is in these countries that we most need to keep our refreshments and food sufficiently cool. If we want to install our absorption cooler on a boat and we can only use gas, we will unfortunately have to give it up, as gas is not allowed on ferries and boats.

But we also have to take into account that this type of chiller will not operate efficiently at an angle of inclination greater than 5-6 degrees. Therefore, when driving in mountainous valley areas, this type of cooler may not always work efficiently.
