Rules for yellow flashing lights
An amber beacon flashing light is a warning device which must be used by law:
- when a vehicle is carrying out road or utility cleaning or construction work,
- when carrying waste, when transporting materials for road construction,
- when towing with another vehicle (e.g. in the case of wheel clamps), i.e. when carrying out an official removal operation.
- The yellow roof light is also required when the vehicle or its load is oversized, i.e. exceeds the permitted length and width parameters.
- It must also be used for vehicles which are regularly towing (rescue) or repairing faults.
- The yellow flashers also warn when, for example, a vehicle is carrying a radioactive consignment, but are also mandatory for the accompanying vehicle.
- The yellow roof light also warns of vehicles carrying out personal protection and property protection duties, or cars of civil guards.
Of course, the warning signal should and must only be used when the listed work or activity is in progress. Detailed guidance on the activities and vehicles that may use the warning signal is given in IRM Decree 12/2007 (13.III.).
Who can use an amber beacon light?
Roadside assistance
Towing often takes place in the dark, next to a busy motorway or main road. It is essential that other motorists can see the vehicle being rescued from a distance. This is achieved by using a highly visible yellow roof light on tow trailers. This avoids frequent accidents at night on the side of the road, which occur not only when unmarked vehicles are rescued from breakdowns, but also when changing tyres in poor visibility.
Snowploughs
In winter, icy road conditions and up to knee-deep snow can paralyse traffic. That's when snow ploughs equipped with a giant snow blower or snow blade come into their own. And compared to normal conditions, the braking distance on icy roads is about six times longer, which increases the risk of accidents several times over. This is why it is vital that road clearers can be spotted from a distance by other drivers, even in the darkest and foggiest January snow showers.
Vehicles carrying oversized loads
Vehicles carrying oversized loads, such as huge logs or construction equipment, must use a yellow distinguishing sign. This is because these loads are longer and wider than the standard limit, and therefore require extra attention on the roads. In the interests of safe logistics, trucks and lorries will be fitted with yellow lights so that everyone can be prepared in good time for the unusual cargo they will be transporting.
Vehicles carrying radioactive goods
The transport of radioactive material by road is always subject to authorisation, as there are many radiation protection regulations to comply with. The logistics company has to ensure the safety of the exposed worker and also to distinguish the vehicle carrying the dangerous cargo. These vehicles are, of course, always accompanied, and yellow lights are also displayed on vehicles providing a safety escort.
Construction vehicles
Even small general construction projects involve a lot of logistics. As well as transporting various construction materials, it can be a real challenge to transport construction machinery to the site, which can be transported to the site as the oversized loads mentioned earlier. Excavators, loaders, crane trucks and drilling machines can all be fitted with yellow roof lights to show when a machine is in use.
Municipal vehicles
Road rollers used for road resurfacing work or refuse collection vehicles that are also in operation at night will all have a yellow traffic light. But the same can also apply to municipal police, who, unlike the police, use yellow rather than red and blue indicators.
