FIAMM Energy Technology owes its huge success to the fact that it has been continuously developed to meet the different needs of the market. For example, their products based on advanced AGM technology, such as gel batteries that require no maintenance. Nowadays, AGM technology is mainly used in start/stop systems with regenerative braking. AGM is an abbreviation for Absorbent Glass Mat, which is a technology for absorbent glass mats.
How does it all work? The glass wool absorbs and thus binds the acid. But we should also mention EFB batteries, which provide high reliability. EFB is short for Enhanced Flooded Battery, which contains liquid electrolyte. This creates a starter battery that is resistant to cyclic loading and is used in high energy demanding vehicles. But FIAMM's product range has also developed innovative solutions for many other applications, such as home energy management and storage solutions.
How FIAMM became one of the world's best-known battery manufacturers?
The FIAMM brand, which stands for Fabbrica Italiana Accumulatori Motocarri Montecchio, was founded in Italy in 1942. At the beginning of production, they focused on starter batteries. As it was also an Italian brand, FIAMM became a supplier to Ferrari in the 1950s. The collaboration was so successful that Ferrari won the famous Mille Miglia race in 1950 with FIAMM batteries.
The company continued to grow, which by 1970 meant that it was not only producing batteries for cars and trucks, but also batteries for motorcycles. During these years FIAMM supplied its products to the most important European car manufacturers.
But in the stationary battery sector, the company has designed and developed energy storage systems for major operators such as SIP and Enel. The 1980s saw further growth for the company, as it was during these years that the brand's batteries began to be exported to the USA. During these years, the company's management recognises the potential of the world of sport and begins to collaborate with a number of teams competing in rallying, Formula 1 and the Paris Dakar races, making the brand's products even more popular.
But the company is also catching up with globalisation, and in 2017 51% of FIAMM will be acquired by Hitachi Chemical.
