Nowadays, such batteries are also known as care-free batteries. These batteries do not need to be refilled with distilled water and are virtually smoke-free. Although their lifespan is still significantly longer than conventional batteries, they can be extended with minimal maintenance using a gel battery charger.
What is a gel battery charger good for?
A gel battery charger will keep your gel batteries running smoothly under everyday use, giving them optimum cycle life and protecting them from discharging. Of course, it may still be necessary to charge even carefree batteries for some reason.
For example, because of lights left on, or if other loads are overused while the vehicle is stationary. But you can only restore your gel battery to working condition with a special automatic charger. These smart chargers start with a relatively fast charge and then switch to trickle charging after a certain charge level to achieve greater efficiency.
Gel batteries are used to power more serious equipment, so the equipment used to charge them also has more sophisticated electronics and special safety features. Since the electrolyte layer in this type is not a liquid but a gel, it must be disconnected from the mains during charging as soon as the battery reaches its maximum charge level.
Otherwise, the gel layer may suffer serious damage, with increased bubble formation. This will damage the cells, resulting in a loss of capacity. In addition, overpressure may occur which cannot escape through the cover. In this case, the enclosure will slowly curl up, in extreme cases the enclosure will simply drop the lid. What to look out for when choosing a gel battery?
Most gel battery chargers have advanced charging technology. Fully automatic models have advanced safety features such as output short circuit, polarity and overheat protection. Make sure that these conditions are met by the gel battery charger you choose. If you are looking for a charger for an existing battery, make sure that the maximum charging current does not exceed 10 percent of the battery capacity.

What is the charging speed of the gel battery charger?
Choosing the right gel battery charger is very important to ensure optimal battery performance and battery life. This is because the charging speed has an impact on battery performance. However, the charging speed depends on the capacity of the battery and the performance of the gel battery charger selected. So, a charger with a higher capacity will charge the battery faster, but charging too fast can destroy the battery. Therefore, always make sure that the charging speed is always optimal for the battery. Whether you're doing a cyclic or constant charge, there's a golden rule to follow.
The ideal charging current for the battery is 10 percent of its capacity. But you also need to pay attention to the temperature coefficient, which is -3mV/Celsius/cell for a 12V battery. But if you're already paying attention to the condition of your battery, it's also worth taking the time to fully charge it at least once a month. This will maximise its lifespan. If you don't keep an eye on your battery, it's very easy for sulphation to set in, which can lead to battery ageing.
Is there overcharge protection in the gel battery charger?
Yes, there is overcharge protection in the gel battery charger. An LED indicator shows the charging status and when the charger has completed its task, i.e. the battery is charged, it will automatically stop. But modern gel battery chargers also have reverse polarity protection and short circuit protection. But you can also choose a modern charger with a sleep mode. In this case, the charger charges the battery silently. This feature is ideal at night or in underground car parks or parking areas where others might be disturbed by the sound.
What output connectors does the gel battery charger have?

The Dometic brand chargers have standard connectors, but the Alfatronic type chargers have what are called "Click 'n' fit" mounting clip connectors with a three-hole mount that can be mounted separately. This makes these lightweight and compact chargers easy to fit even on uneven surfaces.
