SMC Connector (50 Ohm)

The SMC connector is also a widely used type of radio frequency coaxial plug. This connector also offers excellent performance in HF and VHF as well as UHF bands. The name SMC is very similar to SMA and SMB connectors, as this connector is also called SubMiniature, the difference is at the end of the name. There is no letter A or B, but a C. These plugs have been in use since the 1980s and are known as a smaller, higher-performance alternative to SMA connectors. Read more...

What are the characteristics of 50 ohm SMC connectors?

These types of plugs have threaded ends that can be attached to semi-rigid cables. They have stable performance up to 26 GHz. These connectors are also only available in 50 ohm versions, have a very low reflection coefficient and are used for critical microwave connections. Their accuracy makes them ideal for measurement, manufacturing or data transmission.

Where are 50 ohm SMC connectors used?

As mentioned above, these connectors are ideal for high power microwave applications. For example, in the use of aviation and defence systems, for satellite communications, or in the use of test instrumentation, laboratory equipment, and for high speed data transmission.

What is the difference between SMA and SMC connectors?

The SMC offers better electrical performance due to its precise design, but at a higher price than SMA connectors. In addition, one of the most significant differences is the frequency range of the two different plugs. The SMA plug can be used up to 18 GHz, while the SMC offers excellent performance up to 26 GHz.

But it is also worth mentioning that SMA-type sockets are made of nickel-plated brass, while SMC is made of stainless steel, thus improving its corrosion resistance. Moreover, stainless steel has a lower mass, which is why C-type connectors have a lower mass. SMC provides less RF leakage than the SMA plug. What does this mean exactly? At 10 GHz, the SMC connector has a leakage of about 65 dB, compared to 55 dB for the SMA plug.

What are the similarities between SMA and SMC connectors?

In both cases, the plugs have an impedance of 50 ohms. Both have Teflon insulation. In terms of durability, there is not much difference either, as both connectors are designed for 500 mating cycles. After that, both the SMA and SMC connectors lose performance.
