UHF Antennas
- further categoriesUHF stands for Ultra High Frequency. It means ultra high frequency. In Europe it is used for terrestrial broadcasting. In order to receive this frequency band without problems, we need a UHF antenna. However, the signal transmittance of UHF antennas is relatively poor. Its higher frequency makes it sensitive to interference and attenuation from obstacles such as buildings, trees and terrain. Read more...

Since the length of a UHF antenna is related to the length of the radio waves used, UHF antennas using short wavelengths are characterized by a shorter, thicker design. These antennas provide reliable communication conditions when installed in ambulances, taxis, rooftops, etc., and are also widely used in everyday life for EDR radio and reception of UHF TV channels. Dedicated frequency ranges are also available for amateur radio, remote controls, wireless microphone transmission and many other applications.
What frequency range does the UHF antenna operate in?
These types of antennas typically operate in frequencies between 300 MHz and 3 GHz. They are also used in many public safety devices, but are also used in Wi-Fi, LTE and ISM applications.
UHF antenna characteristics
UHF antennas have special characteristics. Perhaps one of the most important things to know about these types of antennas is that the length of the UHF antenna is the same as the length of the radio waves used. Therefore, these antennas are shorter than their other types. As mentioned earlier, these antennas are widely used in public safety devices and LTE applications.
Because of its properties, it is one of the most reliable types of antennas for emergency point-to-point communications. In addition, most GSM and UMTS mobile networks use this type of antenna for proper connectivity between mobile phones and internet devices.
What is the maximum signal transmission distance with a UHF antenna?
For stable good quality reception, a properly installed UHF antenna is required. The maximum signal transmission distance of a 9 dB UHF antenna is 15-20 km. The 14.5 dB version has a range of 25-40 km, but there are also antennas that can communicate up to 40-60 km. The 18 dB UHF antennas have a transmission range of up to 50-70 km. When connected to an amplifier, the range can be extended up to 80-100 km.
What types of UHF antennas exist?
UHF antennas are commonly used in applications such as mobile phones, satellite communications and TV broadcasting. What types of UHF antennas can be distinguished? There is the passive UHF logper antenna. These antennas do not have their own power supply and use the energy of radio signals to receive and transmit data. Their frequency range ensures a smooth and clear signal transmission. In a home environment they are perfect for receiving a stable TV signal. These are the antennas of choice for receiving AlligTV broadcasts.
But let's also look at what to look out for when buying. The device you choose should have horizontal polarisation, a weather and corrosion resistant mechanical design, a 75 ohm impedance antenna output and an antenna gain of at least 10 dBd. These versions have a built-in amplifier so that a weak signal is no longer a problem. However, you should take into account that they tend to increase noise, which can affect the quality of the signal. But you can also choose a dipole antenna.
These models usually have 2 metal rods or wires, which are either horizontally or straight. But we should also mention loop antennas, which are TV antennas. This is a type of omnidirectional antenna that transmits signals in all directions. But what are the most common UHF antennas?
UHF base antenna
One of the most stable methods of receiving transmissions over the UHF band is to install a roof antenna, which needs to be wired up to the receiver. This type of antenna has a quarter wavelength. They must be mounted vertically and have omnidirectional characteristics, which means that they radiate horizontally in all directions. Both omnidirectional and directional antennas with different gain are available from DND Telecom's webshop.
UHF car antenna
A UHF automotive antenna is specifically designed for installation in special vehicles (taxis, ambulances, fire trucks, trailers). Of course, it all depends on the quality of the antenna, as various environmental obstacles such as mountains and tall buildings can significantly reduce the quality of the transmission reception. It is therefore essential that vehicles on the road, even for life-saving purposes, can overcome the communication challenges presented by the environment without any problems. DND Telecom's webshop offers a range of both magnetic car antennas and retractable antennas.
UHF handheld radio antenna
UHF handheld antennas, also available in cut-to-size designs, provide sufficiently high reception sensitivity for handheld radio use.
UHF Yagi antenna
This type of UHF antenna consists of a pair of metal rods placed parallel to each other. It is excellent for television reception and amateur radio. This type of antenna is also known as a Yagi-Uda antenna. They were developed in Japan in the 1920s, hence the specific name. It has the advantage of being very efficient and can be installed in weak signal zones. It is really effective when equipped with a motor that moves the antenna in different directions. Because the UHF Yagi antenna is omnidirectional, it transmits and receives horizontally in a preferred direction.
What connection options are available for UHF antennas?
There are a number of options, but before you get the connectors, let's look at the purpose and where you want to place the UHF antenna. For a base antenna, you may need an N socket and F type connectors and connectors. For car UHF antennas use PL plugs, and for handheld radio antennas use BNC connectors and SMA plugs.
How complicated is the installation of a UHF antenna for the average user?
If you want to install a car-mounted UHF antenna as a fixed installation, please seek professional help. If you want to install a handheld radio antenna, we can do it ourselves. But the installation of base antennas also requires some knowledge and manual skills. So, if you don't dare to install UHF base antennas on your own, call a professional.

What you should know about frequency bands
Whether it's providing wireless internet access, broadcasting radio or TV, and operating other everyday electronics, these devices receive and emit signals. Each has its own block of frequencies - these blocks are called frequency bands, which make up a certain part, or segment, of the total frequency spectrum.
How does the signal get from the transmitting antenna to the device?
The electromagnetic waves emitted from the transmitting stations are received by the receiver's antenna based on frequency bands designated to the nearest MHz. The frequency bands used for antennas (e.g. UHF and VHF bands) have specific properties that allow the antenna to receive a signal from the transmitter side. This means that everyone can enjoy crystal clear transmission, whether analogue or digital.
