VHF Antennas
- further categoriesVHF is one of the radio frequency bands, and a VHF antenna is an antenna specifically designed for this frequency band, i.e. this high frequency range, usually used for FM radio and television broadcasts. But it is also the frequency band for aviation, marine and amateur radio, as well as the professional VHF band. At DND Telecom's webshop you can choose from a wide range of VHF antenna types and brands, all of which are of excellent quality. Read more...

VHF antenna types and selection criteria
The very high frequency (VHF) band is the radio frequency range between 30 MHz and 300 MHz, while the ultra high frequency (UHF) band is the range between 300 MHz and 3000Mhz (3Ghz). A VHF antenna can be a stand-alone antenna designed to serve only the designated VHF frequencies, or it can be combined with antennas in other frequency bands, most commonly UHF.
This, coupled with the fact that a VHF antenna can be used in a wide range of applications due to its wide frequency range, means that an antenna of this type is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit our purposes. In addition, VHF antennas can be installed indoors or outdoors.
VHF antennas can be used not only for television or radio broadcasts, but also for marine applications where they provide the ability to communicate with other boaters and shore stations. There are also so-called base, i.e. roof, car or handheld VHF antennas. VHF and UHF wavelengths are used for two-way radios in vehicles, aircraft and handheld transceivers, walkie-talkies.
What frequency range does the VHF antenna support?
VHF antennas use radio frequencies between 30-300 MHz. For example, base VHF antennas cover frequencies between 87.5 and 108 MHz. This range includes professional and amateur, as well as marine and reps band frequencies. Today, VHF signals are mainly used on board ships or vehicles where interference to signal transmission is minimal. Because they are less subject to interference, they can continue to transmit signals at a given transmission power. For example, base VHF antennas cover frequencies between 87.5 and 108 MHz.
What type of connector does the VHF antenna have?
Selecting a high quality connector compatible with the VHF antenna will ensure that this type of antenna provides optimum performance. Depending on whether it is a handheld or base VHF antenna, we use RPSMA, SMA, FME, SMC, BNC connectors. But for a car-mounted VHF antenna, you simply plug it into the PL socket of the radio antenna.
What is the optimum range for VHF antenna performance?
The range of this type of antenna depends to a large extent on which version it is. A hand-held VHF antenna has a range of 5-6 km, but a hand-held VHF antenna placed 15 metres above the ground can communicate effectively at distances of up to 10-12 km. Car-mounted and base VHF antennas have a much longer range. This can be up to 50-80 km.
What is the power handling capacity of the VHF antenna?
This also depends on the VHF antenna used. For example, the maximum output power of a base VHF antenna ranges from 200-350 W, while the maximum output power of a handheld VHF antenna is 10 W and that of the car-mounted version is 100 W.
What size and weight is the VHF antenna?
This depends largely on the type of VHF antenna you have. To work properly, this type of antenna also needs to be of a suitable length, but you could say that such models need to be resonant. But let's look at the details. A handheld VHF antenna weighs around 50 grams and measures 20-25 cm. Vehicle-mounted VHF antennas weigh no more than 100-120 grams, but range in length from 70 to 100 cm. The weight of the base VHF antenna is much higher than the two previous versions: around 900 grams.
Which brands of VHF antennas are available in the DND Telecom webshop?
We have a selection of car VHF antennas from Sirio, Albrecht, Midland and Diamond brands. For base VHF antennas, Sirio and Diamond brand antennas are the ones you can buy. If you need a handheld VHF radio antenna, the Diamond brand is available.
What are the universal uses of VHF antennas?
- FM radio
- Digital audio broadcasting (DAB)
- Television broadcasting (analogue)
- Radio amateurs (6m, 2m)
- Ground mobile radio systems
- Air traffic control and transport
- Maritime and maritime radio
- Meteorological satellites
